Arizona Republic letters: Legislator caving in on payday loans
Dave Hall, Sun City West, writes this no-nonsense letter to Russell Pearce and any others who may try to save payday lenders:
The payday-loan industry initiative went down in flames in November as voters rejected allowing legalized loan sharks to continue in business past 2010.
Although $14 million spent by the sharks couldn’t buy the voters, it looks like they’ve continued “visiting” our own Legislature to overturn the voters’ will.
Sen.-elect Russell Pearce, R-Mesa, now says he is going to push to extend their licensing anyway, even though voters clearly would like to eliminate this industry, which preys on our most vulnerable residents.
Pearce repeated the industry’s mantra when he said, “At times, people have no other place to go to for a loan.”
Should society legalize brothels even though it may be the only place some men can go for female companionship?
It is no wonder we voters continue to vote down pay raises for the Legislature. We’re tired of our politicians listening to lobbyists more than the voters.
